Nash Ezekiel Montalbo was born yesterday at 3:31pm, weighing in at 7 lbs. 2 oz. and 21 inches long! He was quickly whisked off to the NICU where he was seen by his cardiologist.
Here's the report we got...
Nash will be in the NICU for the next 1-2 weeks where he will be given Prostin through his umbilical cord (How cool is that? No sticking him anywhere!) to keep open his PDA. Then in 1-2 weeks he will have surgery to remove his transverse aorta (if you click on the PDA link, in the picture the transverse part is right at the top, the arch, on the red aorta). Like they had thought before birth, Nash's whole aorta is smaller than it should be, but the transverse aorta is very narrowed (It's about 1mm in diameter.) So keeping the PDA open will bypass this part of the aorta until they can do the surgery. In this 1st surgery they will remove the transverse and then connect the ascending and descending aorta. They will probably also put a band on his pulmonary artery (since it's so much larger at it's normal size) to keep blood from backing up into his lungs. After the surgery, Nash will likely be in the ICU on a ventillator for 4 days or so. He will then be moved to another room, until he is eating normally again. His doctor said that is a big concern for infants, because they usually don't want to eat after being on the ventillator.
He will have a 2nd surgery, probably within the 1st year, to repair his VSD.
The 3rd surgery that he may have to have, in years, would be to replace his aortic valve. A normal aortic valve has 3 equal-sized leaflets and Nash's valve has 2. (I don't really know very much about this surgery or even this condition, because this was something we learned about after birth.)
So far, things are going very well. Everyone at the hospital is wonderful. Nash is eating very well. And we are hoping to learn more on Monday when the cardiologist meets with the surgeon.
